The goal of complex decongestive therapy (CDT) is to reduce lymphedema volume, mitigate cellulitis risk and improve quality of life.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage, alone, is not enough to decrease swelling but instead is used in combination with compression bandaging, skin care, graded exercises, compression garments and patient education.
Swelling will often reoccur and worsen without CDT.

Once it reaches stage II, lifelong maintenance becomes necessary.
